Free unofficial mobile port of a racing classic

Need for Speed Underground 2 is a free racing game. It is a remake of the classic 2004 action experience from Electronic Arts. In this unofficial mobile port, you get to relish the campaign that continues from the first Need for Speed.

As the first open-world game in the NFS franchise, Need for Speed Underground 2 is a classic that deserves a mobile remake but it doesn’t deliver because of its restrictions—both in gameplay and visuals. You might want to check out Need for Speed Most Wanted or Need for Speed Hot Pursuit for actual, official EA releases.

Tune your racing car once more

In Need for Speed Underground 2, you play as the customizable main character. After beating the street gang in the first NFS Underground game, you receive an invitation that will take you to a new location. There, you can tune and style up your car, which you then use to participate in various street races and ultimately become the best underground racer.

The controls are very easy to understand, however, as an unofficial game, there are restrictions with this app. The graphics are still similar to the original game and with this poor optimization, it shows up as low-quality images that look bad on your screen. It has pixelated visuals and a dated aspect ratio that's not compatible with modern display devices.

While the dated visuals, sound effects, and gameplay mechanics are understandable for a 2004 racing game, the app issues are another matter entirely. The app tends to lag and freeze at some points in the game. Even worse, there are game-crashing errors that are impossible to predict or avoid and these can potentially ruin your gaming experience as a whole.

Promising, but poorly executed

If you’re looking for an NFS experience for mobile, there are official EA releases that are optimized for your smartphone. Unfortunately, Need for Speed Underground 2 is neither an official release nor a well-running app for mobile devices. Its range of issues makes it challenging to enjoy the classic open-world racing experience. If you really want NFSU 2, you can explore emulators instead.
